POOR PASSWORD BEHAVIOR #3

Many people use the same password for years or change their password in a simple way quickly guessed by Internet Criminals, whose sophisticated attack tools then access anything they want to steal from your business.

Never, Ever!

Don’t ever, ever, ever, ever, never, ever, ever reuse passwords.

The security of all your accounts is in danger if you use the same password for everything.

Reusing the same passwords puts you at risk of an Internet Criminal attack known as “credential stuffing.” A credential stuffing attack is when an Internet Criminal takes stolen passwords and uses them to gain access to other accounts. Credential Stuffing assumes people often use the same password across multiple sites.

Don’t ever, ever, never, ever, ever, ever, ever reuse passwords.

The one-character trick – isn’t slick.

This poor password behavior is when people change one single character to update their password.

This is a password mistake many people make when asked to reset their passwords – they comply by changing a “12” to a “13,” for example. Password-guessing programs are wise to this trick and can sniff it out in a micro-second.

The Non-Alpha Character Addition Is A No No!

A variation of the dangerous single character update is to add a non-alphanumeric character by tacking “!” onto the end of your existing password. That’s the oldest trick in the book. Internet Criminals are wise to it. Non-alphanumeric characters should be used within the password, but not at either end.

How long does it take to crack a password?

With today’s technology, passwords require much less time to crack than just 2 years ago. For example, a 7-character password with letters, numbers and symbols took 7 minutes (that’s 430 seconds) to crack in 2020 and took just 31 seconds in 2022.[1]
